What is PLA?
A short overview of PLA: what it's made of, its properties and how to care for it.
What is PLA made of?
PLA (polylactic acid) is a plastic made from renewable materials such as corn starch or sugarcane, and the most common material in 3D printing.
Properties and care
PLA is hard and strong but can break from a heavy knock, and it softens at around 60 °C. So it's best not to keep it in a hot car or in the sun by a window, or put it in the dishwasher.
PLA and the environment
PLA can be broken down by industrial composting, but in a home compost or out in nature this happens much more slowly.
